#MyHomeMyStyle: 'We renovated the home interiors ourselves. In lockdown, I have been making the best of leftover material.'

When advertising professional Joan Travasso is not designing for clients, she’s making art for her home. The DIY-enthusiast sets time aside to create something handmade almost every weekend. Leftover pieces of wood-finished vinyl floor and cardboard are turned into wall art. An old crochet collection is thoughtfully arranged and sewn into a table runner. Even the fridge is given a vibrant floral makeover. “In lockdown, I have been making the best of leftover material available around the house,” elaborates Joan who runs a media agency in Mumbai. While the furniture selection reveals a love for a Mid-century Modern aesthetic, the home channels Joan’s grandmillenial style. Chinoiserie prints on cushions and crockery, crochet and lace accents, vintage-inspired picture frames and needlepoint art. “We renovated the home interiors ourselves, right from purchasing the raw material to executing the layout and accessorizing,” she says. In lockdown, she misses the freedom to meet the people closest to her – and visiting the beauty salon, she adds. “The initial phase of the lockdown was a blessing with more family time. We still enjoy listening to music daily, trying new recipes and home decor DIY’s over the weekend,” she smiles.(Joan Travasso is an advertising professional who lives with her husband and four-year-old daughter in Mumbai. Meenakshi Kapoor studied computer networking, but fate had more creative things in store for her. She started work on the interior design team at a friend’s architectural studio. “I learned on the job. I was a natural with home and space styling. I style shoots for brands as well as architects,” she says.Meenakshi’s passion for and experience with styling is evident across her independent home in Mumbai’s western suburbs. “This was before Pinterest and Google; I derived a lot of inspiration from decor magazines,” recalls the décor enthusiast who continues to tweak her eight-year-old home’s interiors. “There’s never a last for my home as it’s constantly evolving,” she says. The space’s minimalist eclectic style draws on a diverse palette of materials, patterns and textures. Anglo-Indian furniture pieces sit next to clean-lined metal decor; contemporary Indian prints coexist with geometric patterns on textiles, textured linens and plants tie it all together.(Meenakshi Kapoor is a self-taught home decor and product stylist. Radhika Shenoi Sethi describes herself as a private banker who works to fund her love of travel, books and décor. Her passion for the third deepened post marriage, when she and her husband moved into a rental apartment in Mumbai. Over the last three years, she has thoughtfully curated her home interiors with design elements, old and new — like a one-of-a-kind, distressed bar from a factory in Rajasthan. “I enjoy creating a space that feels like it has been filled with special items collected throughout a lifetime,” says Radhika who turns to design blogs, Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. The 500-square-foot studio is decorated in a primarily neutral palette with natural textures and the occasional colour pop. Areas are demarcated via functional, furniture pieces. “In lockdown, I realised how essential it is for my home to be a happy, stress-free and productive space. So I brought a little Hygge into my home [by first], decluttering the space and then adding candles, indoor plants, soft furnishings, books and rugs,” says Radhika.(Radhika Shenoi Sethi is a private banker who lives in Mumbai with her husband. 3 steps to talk with kids about death in the pandemic

      * As India's Covid-19 cases rise, it’s increasingly likely to receive news about related deaths within our community. * While it’s natural to want to shelter kids from such realities, should we be preparing them for possible loss in the pandemic?

While Noora D’Mello is not keen on labels, she loosely defines her home interiors style as bohemian. “I don't let labels stop me from using whatever I please to make my apartment look and feel like a home,” she elaborates. As a florist and die-hard DIYer, her days in quarantine have been peppered with little projects – several of which, involve plants! She is grateful for her balcony garden that’s thriving with the ‘plant babies’ she has nourished over the years. “My family is really keeping my spirits up! I'm very grateful that we are home, safe. A normal day for us includes gardening in the morning, a look at the progress of our propagation station. We all enjoy pitching in to cook our meals; we do bake a lot (keeps my kiddo, Nyah, entertained). Then a home workout and night rituals,” she says. The balcony is where Noora and her family have spent a lot of time over the last two months. It offers them a piece of the sky and views of the local park with its resident canines, both of which, she misses dearly. She’s currently waiting for the seal on her building to be lifted so she can renew her daily ritual of feeding the street pups.(Noora is a Mumbai-based florist who specializes in wedding floral design, bespoke bouquets and curated corporate gifts. PICS: Ingenious Ideas from a 1,000-sq-ft Mumbai Apartment

At first glance, this Mumbai residence seems like an open book. On entering, its layout flows seamlessly, presenting just about every social space in a single glance. This includes a living cum formal dining area; an entertainment lounge (an erstwhile bedroom) and a breakfast nook with the kitchen beyond. A closer look though, reveals many an ingenious design idea packed into the 1,000-square-foot apartment. Sahiba Madan, principal architect and founder of design studio Kalakaarihaath Inc, explains that the 3BHK apartment, situated in a 20-year-old building in the tony suburb of Powai, was gutted and re-planned to suit its residents’ needs. “Much like any other Mumbai home, every space was crucially sculpted to optimise storage and usability,” explains Madan. The interior design was overseen by her firm’s architectural arm, Insitu by Kalakaarihaath. While the primary focus was functional, the team drew on the parent company’s artistic expertise to include art in the design process. A restrained material palette of teak, Indian marble, terrazzo, brass and cane led to a home that radiates with a sense of warmth and nostalgia. Madan explains that all furniture pieces were custom designed; some were conceptualised as “a translation of artworks developed at Kalakaari Haath.” The reclaimed Burma teak rafters in the entertainment lounge, for instance, feature hand-carved lotuses. A customized wallpaper surprises you within a corner cabinet. The bed headboards have been incorporated with textile art. Completing the artisanal, old-world vibe of the home is a thoughtful curation of décor that includes macramé plant-holders, ceramic pickle bharanis, Art Deco lamps from Chor Bazaar, brass artefacts, etc.  Click through the slideshow for ways to include some of these smart design ideas into your space.Images: Studio Kunal Bhatia for Insitu by Kalakaarihaath Inc
