  • Elementary Schools Hit By Oklahoma Tornado

    Two elementary schools were directly impacted by a massive tornado in the Oklahoma City area on Monday, according to local media reports. Plaza Towers Elementary School was flattened by the storm and Briarwood Elementary School was also reportedly severely hit. "Apparently some kids were being sheltered there [at Plaza Towers]," local TV station KFOR reported during its live coverage of the tornado.

    The subscription-based, ads-free Twitter alternative that lets you post messages up to 256 characters long has a new app that lets anyone join for free. You can start a limited App.net account -- without an invite or immediately paying for a subscription -- by downloading its new iOS app  called "App.net Passport," which launched Thursday. Founder of App.net Dalton Caldwell explained in a blog post that you can create an account, find and follow other App.net members, set up a profile and bio, and download and discover new App.net apps with Passport.

    Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, brothers, have been identified by authorities as the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing. Shortly before he graduated high school at the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School in 2011, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had sought to understand his roots, a local professor told The Huffington Post. Dr. Brian Williams, a professor of Islamic history at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, recalled that Dzhokhar emailed him in May of 2011 asking him about Chechnya.

    Just hours after the FBI released the first photos of suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, a new photo of Suspect 2 emerged. UPDATE: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured on Friday in Watertown, Mass. Read more about his apprehension here. David Green, 49, of Jacksonville, Fla., had just completed his first Boston Marathon, when he snapped a picture with his iPhone 4S, taken at 2:50, just after the two blasts ripped through the finish line area, killing three people and injuring more than 180 others.

  • Massive Online-Only Library Launches

    After two and a half years of planning, the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), the U.S.'s first public online-only library, opened its doors today -- or at least was made publicly available on the Internet. The DPLA is a free, open-source resource that makes a number of digital collections and archives across the country available in one place. It launched as a series of partnerships with the Smithsonian, the National Archives, New York Public Library, the University of Virginia, Harvard, Digital Library of Georgia, Minnesota Digital Library, Mountain West Digital Library and others.

    On Thursday, Facebook announced some major changes to its News Feed, the stream of content on the social network's homepage that first launched in 2006. CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg introduced the new News Feed as a "personalized newspaper" at a press event in Menlo Park, using that terminology several times. News Feed is getting a new design to reflect this.

    Venezuela's Vice President Nicolas Maduro announced to the nation on Tuesday that its president Hugo Chavez has died at 58. Maduro, age 50, had denied rumors in recent days about Chavez's well-being, though he had said multiple times he was fighting for his life. Chavez had entrusted Maduro, a former bus driver, as a loyal spokesman and his preferred choice as successor.
