  • Blue Jays' Russell Martin rips MLB's new intentional walk rule

Major League Baseball and the players’ association have agreed to a rule change that would result in automatic intentional walks beginning in the 2017 season, and Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin isn’t happy about it. While the MLB Players Association has blocked a number of league-proposed rule changes that include a pitch clock, a smaller strike zone and mound visit limits, one rule that did get the green light for this season is the ability to issue an intentional walk without throwing a pitch. By no means are intentional walks automatic, until now.

  • Merriam-Webster officially adds 'five-hole' to the dictionary

For decades, the term “five-hole” has been well-known among hockey players and fans, but hasn’t been widely recognized in an official capacity outside hockey phraseology — until now. Merriam-Webster added more than 1,000 new words on Tuesday, including some modern-day classics like “photobomb” and “binge-watch.” In the sports category, the dictionary added “five-hole” from the hockey world, along with “up-fake” and “airball” from basketball terminology. According to Merriam-Webster, the concept of the five-hole likely originated with Hall of Famer and goaltending innovator Jacques Plante, who numbered the five areas of the net that goalies need to protect.

  • Senators goalie Craig Anderson readying for return amid wife's cancer battle

Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson hasn’t played since Dec. 5. Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson has returned to his team after being away for nearly two months while his wife Nicholle continues her cancer treatment. Anderson, the team’s usual starter, joined his team for practice in Florida on Monday as the Senators returned from the all-star break and prepared to face the Panthers on Tuesday.

  • Moustache Man tearing down Leafs banner in Detroit is an everyday hockey hero

The cameras picked up a hilarious example of this scenario during Wednesday night’s game in Detroit between the Maple Leafs and the Red Wings, when a pair of enthusiastic Toronto fans were swiftly dealt with by an amazingly unapologetic gentleman who was having absolutely none of their crap. It’s unclear whether Moustache Man is a Red Wings fan or a Leafs fan, but based on his facial expression and a reasonable assumption of his motives, it didn’t have any factor in his decision to ruthlessly take matters into his own hands. At least the Toronto fans were good sports about it.

  • Nazem Kadri can't stop talking about his cat

Toronto Maple Leafs centre Nazem Kadri has a cat, and he wants the world to know about it. The three-year-old cat named Jasmine, or “Jazzy,” was caught up in the Toronto sports buzz Tuesday after Kadri decided to thrust the feline into the public eye with her own Instagram account. The story goes that Kadri went looking for a dog at a humane society in Toronto with former Leafs teammate Nick Spaling, but ended up with an impulse cat adoption.
