This past offseason, Marcus Smart re-upped with the Boston Celtics. He committed to the team that drafted him by signing a four-year, $52 million contract. And then he celebrated …

… in part, by recording a freestyle rap song with childhood friend Trey Davis and rapper iAmCompton. The title? “52M.”

Initially, it was private. A mystery. Per TMZ, “never supposed to see the light of day.”

Now … here it is:

(Warning: Explicit language)

Smart’s verse

Smart is featured throughout the video. He comes on the track around the 1:16 mark. His verse, later repeated:

52 mil, that’s a new deal,
13 a year, n—-, that’s how I live
Penthouse suite, n—-, that’s a new feel
Bought the top floor because I need the room
Walk-in closet for my Gucci and Lou
Red bottoms, but I’m rockin’ that blue
Ice on my neck and it’s keepin’ me cool
52, 52, 52 mil …

Smart’s connection to Davis and iAmCompton

So how did this come together?

The three reportedly recorded the freestyle in August. Smart and Davis, we know, are longtime friends. They played AAU ball together in Texas. Davis attended and played basketball at UMass while Smart was in his early years with the Celtics. Davis had stints with multiple G-League teams out of college, playing 45 games last year for the Maine Red Claws – Boston’s affiliate. He and Smart have remained good friends.

As for iAmCompton, TMZ reported he and Smart have also been close friends for years. The track was initially recorded in Los Angeles. The video was filmed at TAO, a popular upscale restaurant and lounge in LA.

And, well, Smart will always have those bars and that video to commemorate his first big NBA contract – a highlight of any professional basketball player’s life.
