Chiefs' last-second touchdown won one gambler $100,000
For the Kansas City Chiefs, Justin Houston‘s late defensive touchdown was merely the capstone on a strong game against a viable, if erratic, Washington Redskins team. For gamblers, however, that touchdown was worth a whole lot more.
Kansas City was a seven-point favorite against Washington, and the over/under closed at roughly 48.5. Houston’s touchdown ran the final score from 23-20 to 29-20, allowing Kansas City to cover the spread and hit the over. That, in turn, turned a whole lot of bets from dogs into winners.
One gambler won $100,000 on the Chiefs at -7, according to Las Vegas sports book operator CG Technology, per ESPN, and CG saw a total of $350,000 swinging from the house to bettors. William Hill sportsbooks saw a “mid-six-figure swing” to bettors, according to ESPN.
Gambling has always been an open secret of NFL late-game broadcasts, with announcers hinting at gambling implications with any late swing. “This might be meaningful to some,” ESPN’s Sean McDonough said as Houston scored, and how right he was. Hopefully nobody shredded their tickets in frustration beforehand.
