'My angels': Blazers' Evan Turner, courtside reporter aid woman in car crash

When accidents happen on a busy freeway, it’s inevitable that the majority of drivers won’t stop and help, trying to keep to their own busy schedules as they navigate their way through the wreckage.

But on Monday afternoon, two “angels” stopped to help Dianna Black, a woman who had just experienced a head-on car crash on Interstate 5 in Oregon. The two individuals were Portland Trail Blazers forward Evan Turner and Blazers courtside reporter Brooke Olzendam.

Olzendam got to the scene first, witnessing the head-on car crash unfold right in front of her, as she told the The Oregonian:

Olzendam quickly slammed on her brakes and pulled over. Olzendam told Black she would call 911 when she said she heard a familiar voice behind her. It was Turner.

“All of sudden I hear this, ‘Hey, what’s going on? Can I help?'” Olzendam said. “And it was Evan. He had pulled off — he was the only one to pull off — and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, yes.'”

Turner had been coming back from the Blazers’ practice facility and had stopped to offer his help. He helped get Black into the passenger seat of his black Rolls Royce on the shoulder of I-5. Medical personnel arrived about 10 minutes later.

Olzendam took to Twitter to share that after Black had calmed down, she asked her if she knew what car she was sitting in. Black had no clue, so when Olzendam told her it was Turner’s, she was “in a daze.” She responded that her dad was a big Blazers fan.

“They are my angels,” Black told The Oregonian. “They helped me. They got me out of my car and away from the airbags. It was smoking. Brooke calmed me down a lot.”

Turner told The Oregonian that Olzendam was “the real hero.”

Black and her father made it to a Blazers preseason game against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night after Olzendam set them up with a pair of tickets.
