Daily Digit: STD rates hit record high in the U.S.

Daily Digit is the story behind the numbers that make our world work. Today we’re looking at the increasing number of sexually transmitted disease cases. In 2017, 2.3 million people were diagnosed with an STD. The number of gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia cases have been on a steep incline for the fourth consecutive year. Chlamydia was most common, with 1.7 million people diagnosed with it; 45% of those diagnosed were females ages 15 to 24. The number of gonorrhea cases has risen by 67%, and nearly doubled in men since 2013. The number of syphilis cases has risen by 76%, and was most common in men who have sex with other men. Luckily, these can all be treated with antibiotics, but most people go undiagnosed and untreated. So make sure you play safe and get tested often!
