After one of the greatest British summers to date, we’re left questioning how to navigate our wardrobes through to autumn with ease (and our credit cards still intact).

With the air still heavy from the after-effect of the heatwave but the guarantee that more showers are on the way, it’s time to think up a sartorial strategy.

From this season’s most talked about print to the simple accessory designed to weatherproof your wardrobe, these are the tips and tricks to consider ahead of September.

Team animal print with a chunky knit

In case you’ve been living under a rock, animal print is major news this season. We were first introduced to the divisive trend at the AW18 shows with Victoria Beckham and Calvin Klein leading the fash pack.

For those of you unsure of how to tackle the likes of snake print or leopard spots, look to Lucy Williams for a hefty dose of inspo.

Renowned for effortless chic, her grid space is sure to serve up some serious outfit ideas. With crisp mornings on the horizon but a humid spritz to the air come afternoon, we’ll be teaming this Zara snake print mini with a chunky knit. Finish with Matrix-inspired sunnies for added likes.

Sport this season’s most divisive trend

No bike required: cycling shorts are the Kardashian-inspired trend that’s not going anywhere this season. Though it may prove a sartorial step too far in athleisure for some, there’s no denying that the lycra garment will work wonders in the coming months.

With another few weeks of heat on the horizon, team with a blazer and ankle boots to successfully nail transeasonal dressing in one fell swoop.

Slip into autumn in style

Apologies in advance but yes, we’re still banging on about animal print. This time, in the seriously covetable silhouette of a slip skirt.

Follow Monikh Dale’s lead and invest in an autumn-ready number. This one has sadly sold out from & Other Stories while the now-famous Réalisation Par number is also yet to make a reappearance.

Thankfully though, the likes of Urban Outfitters and Miss Selfridge are serving up similar styles just make sure to hurry to the checkout…

When the clouds shroud the sun, throw on a chunky knit or layer up a cardigan or two if you fancy ticking off another major SS18 trend in the process. Come autumn: add boots.

Hold on to linen for a little longer

If like us, you spent a large majority of your wage on linen this summer then fear not, as the trend can be worked into your autumnal wardrobe.

We’ll be wearing Mango’s well-documented linen jacket well into September simply by switching co-ordinating shorts for jeans and sandals for boots.

The linen suit will also prove handy in the office a little while longer. Accessorise with a silky shirt and mules.

Weatherproof your favourite spring dress

Who says that the end of summer spells the end of your go-to Rixo dress? As we desperately cling onto the final few days of sun, inject some practicality into your favourite spring dress with a pair of slogan socks and trainers.

Whether it’s an oversized number or a floral-emblazoned midi, a simple switch in accessories and footwear will add seasons to the look.

Bag a boiler suit

Yup, the trend which made pop culture history thanks to eighties hit ‘Ghostbusters’ has made a comeback for AW18. Follow the Insta-set and opt for pastel hues, seventies-inspired silhouettes and bold stitching.

If you’re taking to the streets then team with trainers while nineties-approved kitten heels will prove Insta cat nip.

Throw on tights

You heard it here first: 2018 was undoubtedly the year of the tights. From logo-emblazoned numbers by label-of-the-moment Fendi to Gucci’s sell-out pull-ups, the humble accessory has never been more sought after.

So before you hang up this summer’s skirts and dresses for good, consider throwing on a pair. When shopping for autumn-ready tights look for sheer styles and if feeling brave, choose ones which bear a slogan.

Team with kitten heels or box-fresh trainers and you’re good to go.
