Our favorite affordable upright vacuum cleaner is the Shark NV352. Thanks to its swivel joint brush head, it can twist and turn to navigate around furniture with ease. It has a small brush head to reach the tightest of corners and includes various attachments.
Just note that the attachments can’t be used unless the canister is detached from the motor, which means you’ll have to carry around the canister as you use the Shark’s Lift-Away feature. If you don’t mind hauling it around by hand then this will do an impressive job at letting you access stairs and even furniture.

2. Dyson V15 Detect
The most frustrating part of vacuuming is the constant struggle with the cord to keep it plugged into the right spot so it can reach exactly where you need it.

3. Miele Complete C3 Kona
Canister vacuums, which require an old-school style vacuum bag, may seem like a thing of the past. However, these models have serious cleaning power.
Our favorite model is the Miele Complete C3 Kona, which is exceptionally built. It's sturdy, and it shows no signs of wobbly or cheap pieces. This does mean the machine has a higher price tag, but it does a superb job of cleaning and capturing dirt, making this a choice model for allergy sufferers who want a serious clean.

4. Craftsman 12004
A wet/dry vacuum can clean up the nastiest of messes in your home. By design, they pick up water, debris, and dirt. We’ve tested out all the best models, and the Craftsman 12004 is our favorite.
This vacuum picks up messes quickly while still being thorough. It doesn’t offer a wide array of attachments, but it does provide a floor squeegee, extension wands, and a utility nozzle.
This vacuum is made for families who need to clean up heavy duty messes or for the craftsman (like it says in the name!) who has a shop that needs tidying. Oh, and did we mention it’s super affordable? Coming in under $75, this powerful vacuum won’t falter.

5. Miele U1 Upright Cat & Dog
Our favorite upright vacuum—that also happens to be our favorite vacuum for wood floors—is the Miele U1 Cat & Dog. This machine is built to last. You’ll see that it is steep in price, but you won’t be looking for another vacuum for years to come after purchasing this machine.
This Miele features weights that prevent it from tipping over, say, as you use hose to stretch into tough spots. It also has a swivel joint that allows it to move easily in whatever direction that you need it to. That’s also why we love it for hardwood floors as it won’t slip or scratch the surface.

6. VacMaster Wet/dry vac
Your vacuum can multitask for you, and the VacMaster wet/dry vac certainly wants to!
With a 12-gallon basin, this vacuum cleans up the biggest of messes in and outside of your home.
It has a variety of eight attachments, including a crevice device that cleans your car in no time—especially after a big road trip with a car full of kids. One of our favorite features is the detachable motor that you can hook up in the backyard and have an instant leaf blower.

7. Tineco A10 Hero
A super affordable, but still high performing, cordless option is the Tineco A10 Hero. It works well at picking up dirt, and we like the LED lights on the brush head that helps reach hard to see places like under the couch.
It has a battery life that lasts from 7 minutes on max power to 14 minutes on regular. This may be where the Tineco has a one up on other cordless options—the Tineco comes with backup batteries so that you can swap out a freshly charged battery so you can clean the whole house without pause.

12. Neato Botvac D7 Connected
For both pet hair and robot vacuum technology, we look to the Neato Botvac D7. It has a D-shaped design that can go tight against the walls of your home to never miss the corners where pet hair tends to collect.
It goes over hardwood and carpet with ease. This vacuum does a nice job of collecting pet hair without getting clogged, so it will do an unstoppable job at cleaning. If you have furniture that runs close to the ground beware of the Neato getting stuck; it stands at 4 inches tall and may not clear everywhere it wants to go.
Luckily, you can avoid a crash or a jam with Neato’s technology that allows you to block off certain areas like pet food and water dishes or low-to-the-ground furniture.
