'Wonder Wheel' trailer: Justin Timberlake as a 1950s lifeguard in Woody Allen's Coney Island drama

In one of Woody Allen’s most famous scenes, the narrator of Annie Hall reminisces about growing up in the shadow of the the Cyclone roller coaster on Coney Island. Now, the director is returning to 1950s Coney Island with Wonder Wheel, named for another of the Brooklyn boardwalk’s historic attractions. And this time, the narrator is not Allen himself but a star who might be his polar opposite: Justin Timberlake. Watch the first trailer above.

In Wonder Wheel, Juno Temple plays a young woman fleeing from the death threats of her gangster husband. In desperation, she turns to her estranged father (Jim Belushi), a Coney Island carousel operator improbably named Humpty, who is married to an actress-turned-waitress (Kate Winslet). Timberlake co-stars as a lifeguard who’s also an aspiring playwright and may just know some secrets about the others. Watch the trailer closely and you’ll spot former Sopranos co-stars Steve Schirripa and Tony Sirico, slipping back into their gangster personas for Allen’s 48th film.

Wonder Wheel will open in select theaters on Dec. 1.
