In case you haven’t had a reminder lately how adorable they are, Tom Hanks just revealed his and Rita Wilson’s shared hobby — and it’s probably the purest thing you’ll hear this week. Or maybe even the rest of the year. During an interview with ET about his upcoming film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Hanks shared the super-sweet way he likes to spend downtime with his wife of 31 years. Spoiler alert? It honestly sounds like something the late, great, heart-of-gold Fred Rogers (whom Hanks plays in the movie) would have enjoyed.
While chatting with ET’s Kevin Frazier on Sunday, Hanks admitted he’s learned quite a bit from slipping into Rogers’ shoes. “When my wife and I are going at it on those rare occasions, when she is letting me know that I’m not really listening to her and I’m trying to establish what the ground rules are [for the argument], when we’re going at it like that, one of us will say, ‘Well, you know what? You know what, honey? It’s good to talk. It’s good to say the things we feel,'” Hanks said with a smile, adopting Rogers’ trademark placid tone. “And that I learned from Mister Rogers.”

Using their words must be working because Hanks and Wilson usually get on pretty well. In fact, says Hanks, they have a shared hobby. “We make soup together. Like, if we have a day off and there’s nothing going on,” he said, adding, “It takes about two to three hours.”

Come on, right? If that doesn’t sound like a Rogers-approved extracurricular activity, we don’t know what does.
Of course, soup-making aside, Hanks and Wilson are a lot like any other couple. As Hanks’ anecdote about their arguments suggests, their relationship isn’t always soup-making-status dreamy. But in addition to channeling Rogers, Hanks says their marriage is strong because they believe that love is a package deal: You take the good with the bad. “When I married Rita, I thought, ‘This is going to require some change on my part.’ I won’t deny that [fate] was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn’t magic the way it’s shown in movies,” he told Oprah in 2001. “In real life, our connection is as concrete as me sitting here. Not that marriage doesn’t come close to being hell in a handbasket sometimes. But we both know that, no matter what, we’ll be with each other — and we’ll get through it.”
A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood hits theaters Nov. 22.
