In the last full trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we finally got our first in-the-flesh look at Supreme Leader Snoke, the disfigured First Order figurehead who lured Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) to the dark side and who only appeared in holographic form in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While Snoke’s mangled mug and towering frame were sights to behold, there was something vaguely familiar about the shiny golden robes he rocked. The wardrobe felt like it came straight out of the closet of Hugh Hefner, the Playboy magazine magnate, who died earlier this fall. Turns out we were onto something.
“Bingo, absolutely!” said Andy Serkis, the motion-capture master who gives voice and form to Snoke, when we noted the similarity between Last Jedi’s Big Bad and Hef.
“Me and [writer-director Rian Johnson] sat down, and we said, ‘Who of everyone — there are so many different dictators you could emulate, there are so many different people out there … but the gold-lamé Hugh Hefner look was definitely the way we wanted to go.”
Perhaps Snoke is a bit of a playboy? “He is,” Serkis laughed.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens Dec. 15.
