Mitt Romney's need for speed resulted in 6 speeding tickets on one trip

Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney admitted on Jay Leno’s Garage that he has a bit of a speeding problem. Romney is an avid car enthusiast, but trouble seems to follow wherever he drives.

“I got a bit of a lead foot,” Romney told Leno. “It’s not a good thing, but, you know, I just go too fast.”

Apparently Romney’s “lead foot” resulted in an unpleasant surprise during a road trip through Switzerland. “Everybody’s driving at, like, 45 miles an hour on this big open road, and I thought, ‘This is crazy,’ so I’m driving at 55 or 60 and having a great time and delighted that I’m able to pass everybody.” When Romney returned home, he found six speeding tickets in the mail.

Switzerland uses cameras to catch speeders, and it sounds as if Romney turned the highway patrol into the paparazzi. “Same thing happened in Italy,” he said. Laughing, he added, “It cost a few bucks.”

Jay Leno’s Garage airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on CNBC.
