First look at Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor in 'Doctor Who'

An early image of Jodie Whittaker in costume as the Doctor in iconic sci-fi show “Doctor Who” has been released.

Whittaker is seen standing in front of the Tardis in the first official image from the BBC, which comes as filming of the new season of “Doctor Who” gets underway. Whittaker replaces Peter Capaldi, whose final appearance in the title role airs over Christmas.

Casting Whittaker (“Broadchurch”) in “Doctor Who” created headlines, as she is the first woman to permanently land the role. “The people that are in these roles that we are excited by, are passionate about, or look up to, don’t always have to tick the same box, and that’s what’s really incredible about it,” Whittaker said amid the hubbub over her casting.

Other cast members have since been announced, including Bradley Walsh as Graham, Tosin Cole as Ryan and Mandip Gill as Yasmin, the Doctor’s companions in the upcoming series.
