Valerie Thompson was going for the motorcycle land speed record of 376 mph when it all went wrong. Racing across the salt flats of Australia’s Lake Gairdner at the World Speed Trials on March 19, her streamlined two-wheeler tipped over at 343 mph. Video of the accident show the fish-shaped bike flipping end over end, rolling over and sliding for more than a mile before finally coming to a rest on its side. Amazingly, the carbon fiber monocoque of the vehicle stayed largely intact, and Thompson suffered only minor bumps and cuts. Thompson told Fox News that it was the first time she ever crashed the bike, with which she set the women’s motorcycle land speed record of 328 mph earlier in the week.

A United Airlines passenger bumped from a flight on walking away with a travel voucher isn't terribly surprising -- except that hers was worth $10,000. For Allison Preiss, a communications director from Washington who began tweeting Thursday morning from Dulles International Airport after she was asked to deboard, her travel experience ended much better than it began. "Well," she later told ABC News, "I can say it was the best flight delay ever." United oversold the flight and asked Preiss, the lowest-fair passenger, to deboard. Thus began her tweetstorm: "United is offering $1K in travel credit for an oversold flight. If nobody bites, they will kick off the lowest fare passenger by pulling them

Imagine a warfighting machine so vast that it stands as tall as an Egyptian pyramid, so powerful that it has unlimited range without refueling for decades, and so lethal that it can destroy hundreds of targets in a hostile country every day for a month. Now imagine not one such machine, but 11 of them - because that’s how many the U.S. Navy has. They are called supercarriers - large-deck, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers unlike the warships of any other nation. They are, in fact, the largest warships ever built. The 2018 defense appropriations bill currently wending its way through Congress contains money for constructing a third such vessel in the Gerald R. Ford class - the first new class
