Battle Creek firefighters save dog from Van Buren Street house fire

BATTLE CREEK - Firefighters rescued a dog from a burning home on Van Buren Street Sunday night.

Battle Creek firefighters were called to the 100 block of East Van Buren Street at about 7:17 p.m. Sunday for a report of smoke coming from a home, they said in a release.

Upon arrival, fire crews observed smoke coming from the second floor and found a dog inside the residence.

The dog was safely removed from the structure and no injuries were reported, fire officials said. No one else was inside the home at the time of the blaze.

The wood-frame home suffered an estimated $15,000 in property damage and $5,000 in contents damage. The bulk of the damage was confined to the second floor, officials said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
