Microsoft is stepping up its advance PR on the next release of Windows, to be called Windows 10. Apparently Windows 8 was such a flop that Microsoft decided it’d take a whole extra version number to clear the Windows name. Either that or it’s playing version number catch-up with Apple, whose desktop operating system is also called version 10: OS X.
The company will unveil the new consumer-focused features of Windows 10 in an announcement from the Microsoft campus at 9 a.m. Pacific time (noon Eastern) on Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Redmond, Washington. We’ll be there to report from the event live.

What we expect
The biggest visible change we’re expecting is an interface that no longer dumps laptop and desktop users into “Tile World,” as our David Pogue calls it. People accustomed to, and happy with, a keyboard-and-mouse interface will now be able to live in that environment full time.

Tweaks to the tile-based interface for tablets and smartphone are also expected, with a more intelligent transition between the modes for convertible tablets like the Microsoft Surface line.
There are also reports that Microsoft will release a new Web browser, currently known as Spartan.
