This Might Be The First Ever 3D-Printed Book Cover -- And It's Wild

Maybe you think book-cover designers would be bummed out or intimidated by technology’s impact on publishing. Can ebook “covers” ever really be as satisfying as print?

Well Riverhead Books has a completely different way of addressing that issue — using technology to create make physical books even more interesting. Specifically: the 3D-printed slipcover for a limited edition of Chang-rae Lee’s new novel, On Such a Full Sea.

As explained in the video above, the MakerBot-printed slipcase extends the clean Futura typography of the edition’s cover into the third dimension. It’s eye-catching and sleek. The MakerBot blog adds:

“What I like about this is that it revisits the book as an object,” said Lee, who prefers to read on paper “even though I write on a screen. The pleasure I get from reading is something tactile.”

Lee will be reading from “On Such a Full Sea” on January 16th at 7pm at the MakerBot Store, in New York. Space is limited, so please register in advance. You can also order a copy of the limited edition now.
