Apple Plans March 15 Event for 4-inch iPhone (Report)

A new iPhone, updated iPad and minor Apple Watch tweaks may be headed our way sooner rather than later. 9to5Mac, usually a reliable source of Apple rumors, reports that the company is planning a March 15 event to unveil those new product.

Spring events aren't unprecedented for Apple, which usually holds off on major product updates until the fall. Just last year, the company previewed its Apple Watch in March, a month before the smartwatch made its retail debut. And Apple took the wraps off the original iPad in a January 2010 event.

The rumored March 15 event likely won't showcase anything as significant as a new product line for Apple. Rather, it sounds like the company would use the event to fine-tune some of its existing offerings.

The most significant release reportedly slated for March would be the iPhone 5se, a smaller version of Apple's smartphone that marks a return to the 4-inch screen of Apple's iPhone 5s. The smaller phone could be Apple's attempt to broaden its iPhone offerings to include a lower-priced phone alongside the flagship iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models.

Other products that could potentially share the spotlight at a March 15 press event include the iPad Air — which hasn't seen an update since October 2014 — and the Apple Watch. While the more substantive Apple Watch 2 update appears slated for this fall, Apple could introduce new color bands and software features for the current watch.

Rumors of a March 15 event come just a week after Apple announced a record quarter for sales and profits, but one that also saw slowing iPhone sales growth.
