Apple Just Hired Marc Newson as VP of Design. See His Most Legendary Creations.

It’s no secret that Apple has been on a watch-focused hiring spree this past year, and now, as Vanity Fair reports, it’s added another huge name to its roster: Marc Newson. For the unacquainted, Newson is a world-famous designer who’s contributed to the making of bikes, cars, furniture, restaurants, and — most importantly — the classic line of Ikepod watches.

But that’s not his only draw. Apple’s senior vice president of design Sir Jony Ive and Newson have long maintained a design-inspired friendship. The two collaborated last November in curating and designing products for U2 singer Bono’s (RED) auction, which earned $26.2 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa. In a Vanity Fair profile last year, Ive described their mutual interest in creating perfect objects.

“We are both fanatical in terms of care and attention to things people don’t see immediately,” Ive told Paul Goldberger. “It’s like finishing the back of a drawer. Nobody’s going to see it, but you do it anyway. Products are a form of communication — they demonstrate your value system, what you care about.”

Newson, too, affirmed that their love of design bordered on compulsion.

“We are both obsessed with the way things are made.”

Now, presumably, the two will get to make things together, for Apple, living happily ever after until the end of time.

Below, a quick survey of Newson’s most famous creations over the years, from artful furniture to couture Paris boutiques.
