Trump: I can win the Hispanic vote

HOUSTON — Donald Trump’s tough position on immigration — including his pledge to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border — has helped to make him the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination. But it has also earned him one the highest negative ratings in the GOP field among Hispanic voters, an important voting bloc in the general election.

Asked during Thursday’s GOP debate if that low standing would make him “unelectable” in November, Trump insisted that he was doing better with Hispanics than polls suggested. “I will do really well with Hispanics,” he insisted. “I will do better than anybody on this stage.”

But at the same time, Trump doubled down on many of the anti-immigration policies that he’s promoted during the campaign, including his pledge to have a border wall built. He also insisted that he would make Mexico pay for the wall. Pressed on how exactly he would do that, Trump declined to offer specifics and suggested that he might be willing to start a trade war if Mexico balked at his demand.

On Thursday, former Mexican President Vicente Fox insisted Mexico would never pay for a border wall. “I’m not going to pay for that f***ing wall,” Fox told Fusion. “He should pay for it. He’s got the money.”

Asked about Fox’s comments, Trump replied, “It just got 10 feet taller.”

And then he took a shot at Fox’s salty language. “If I would have used even half of that word, it would have been [a] national scandal,” he said.
