The rise of Martin O'Malley

Martin O'Malley is in the race for the Democratic nomination for president. O'Malley, 52, won a surprise victory in the 1999 mayoral election in heavily black Baltimore, and was re-elected for a second term in 2003. His focus on policing helped bring down the city’s crime rate, but the recent riots there have called that legacy into question. He was elected governor of Maryland in 2006, and re-elected in 2010, retiring last year.
