Ted Cruz’s campaign: ‘Obama wants your guns’

The Ted Cruz for President campaign pulled the trigger on an Internet fundraiser Tuesday that capitalizes on President Obama’s push for tighter gun control mere hours earlier.
“Obama wants your guns,” reads an ominous headline. “Support the protection of your Second Amendment rights!”
The appeal for campaign cash on Cruz’s official website features a large Photoshopped picture of the president in what appears to be SWAT gear.
On Twitter, the Republican presidential candidate and Texas senator urged his supporters to fight back against Obama’s executive actions to curb gun violence, which Cruz deems unconstitutional. The tweet includes the hashtag #ComeAndTakeIt, a slogan of independence and defiance closely associated with the Texas Revolution, and features another Photoshopped image of Obama — this time wearing a crown.
“Gun control is government control,” text sprawled across the image reads. “Fight back.”

In an appeal to small-government conservatives, both images suggest that, from Cruz’s perspective, Obama has stepped beyond the powers of the Oval Office.
Earlier Tuesday in the East Room of the White House, the commander in chief unveiled his plan to require anyone in the business of selling firearms to register as a licensed gun dealer and conduct background checks.
Obama also dismissed criticisms from politicians vying for the Republican nod that he does not respect the right to bear arms. He mentioned his past teaching constitutional law when arguing that the nation can find ways to reduce gun violence in ways that are consistent with the Second Amendment.
“Contrary to claims of some presidential candidates, apparently, before this meeting, this is not a plot to take away everybody’s guns. You pass a background check; you purchase a firearm.”
