A look back at Lincoln Chafee

Lincoln Chafee, 62, a former senator and governor of Rhode Island, is joining the race for the Democratic nomination for president, culminating his transformation from a liberal Republican to a moderate Democrat. Chafee is the son of the late Republican Senator John Chafee. He was appointed to his father’s seat after the elder Chafee’s death in 1999 and won a full term in the election of 2000. As senator, Chafee was the only Republican to vote against the war against Iraq. After losing a reelection bid, he was elected governor of Rhode Island as an independent. He was a co-chair of President Obama’s 2012 campaign and joined the Democratic Party the following year.
