A Thursday evening fire in north Redding destroyed a garage and the vehicles inside, but firefighters were able to prevent a nearby apartment building from burning down.

The Redding Fire Department went to the two-alarm blaze at 550 Buckeye Terrace off Lake Boulevard about 6:30 p.m.

The first reports said a van was on fire and the blaze was spreading to a tree and a nearby fourplex.

When firefighters arrived, they found the garage completely on fire. Flames were spreading toward the apartment complex and vegetation.

A second alarm means all available crews and equipment in the city need to assist right away.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes, but the garage and vehicles were a total loss, fire officials said.

"Fire crews were able to extinguish the exposure of the apartment building nearby causing minimal damage and also were able to keep the spread to vegetation to a half-acre," the fire department said.

Building damage was estimated at $50,000 while property damage totaled $5,000.

The fire's cause is under investigation.
