A 37-foot boat caught fire Friday evening, burned down to the water line, and then sank below the waters of Lake Huron, the Coast Guard said.

A man, the boat operator and sole person aboard, was rescued.

Chief Petty Officer Michael Davis of the Tawas Station said Monday that there were no injuries and a Coast Guard vessel was dispatched to the scene to protect any other vessels in the area.

The survivor's name was not released.

Davis confirmed TV news reports that a Good Samaritan near the boat fire responded to a marine broadcast around 7 p.m. and rescued the boat operator who was already in the water with a life jacket near Point Lookout Harbor in AuGres.

The Good Samaritan, Davis said, brought the man to emergency responders.

Still, it was unclear Monday how the fire started or whether the vessel would be salvaged, Davis said. In general, he added, the decision whether to retrieve sunken vessels is made by the Coast Guard, along with state and local authorities.

Usually, Davis said, it's the boat owner's responsibility to cover the recovery costs.
