Yes, A Company Really Made A 'Sexy' 'Handmaid's Tale' Halloween Costume

Welp: If you ever wanted to know what a "sexy" "Handmaid's Tale" costume looks

Welp: If you ever wanted to know what a “sexy” “Handmaid’s Tale” costume looks like, Yandy’s got you covered.

Yandy, a women’s clothing store that without fail produces laughably “sexy” Halloween costumes each year, has outdone itself this season. The clothing store recently showcased the red-cloaked, white bonnet costume from the feminist dystopian TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale” on sale for a whopping $64.95.

The women who wear the red cloaks in the TV series, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, are anything but sexy. Instead, the handmaids are women who have been captured by a militant (and misogynistic) government to essentially be used as sex slaves and baby incubators for the wealthy.

So, it’s no surprise that this costume specifically didn’t go over too well.

“Every year at Halloween I think ‘You know who’s horrible? Yandy.’ and every year I get proven overwhelmingly correct,” Twitter user John Lam aptly pointed out after sharing a photo of the costume.

Less than a day after the controversial costume surfaced online, Yandy pulled the “Brave Red Maiden Costume” from its website and apologized. In a statement written on Yandy’s website, the company said the costume was initially inspired after “witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image.”

Read the company’s statement in full below:

Yandy always has stood, and will continue to stand, at the forefront of encouraging our customers to “Own Your Sexy.” We support our customers being comfortable in their skin, regardless of who they are or what they choose to wear. Our corporate ideology is rooted in female empowerment, and gender empowerment overall,”

Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that our “Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume” is being seen as a symbol of women’s oppression, rather than an expression of women’s empowerment. This is unfortunate, as it was not our intention on any level. Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image.

Given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories we’ve received, we are removing the costume from our site.

Of course, the company’s apology hasn’t stopped many Twitter users from rightfully making fun of the bizarre costume. Scroll below to see more reactions.
