A woman was hospitalized after an SUV and camper caught fire on I-495

WESTBOROUGH — A woman suffered burns to her leg Sunday night after an SUV and the camper it was towing caught fire on Interstate 495, a fire official said Monday.

Both the SUV and the camper appear to be a total loss, Fire Chief Patrick Purcell said.

The fire was reported at 7:44 p.m. The SUV and camper were traveling on I-495 south between Route 9 and the Massachusetts Turnpike on-ramp, Purcell said.

When firefighters arrived, the vehicles were fully engulfed. A propane tank on the camper had "breached," and contributed to the fire, the chief said.

The woman, who was a passenger in the SUV, suffered "minor" burns on one of her legs and was taken to an area hospital to be treated, he said.

It took firefighters from Westborough and Hopkinton about 20 minutes to get the fire under control, Purcell said.

The blaze appeared accidental.

"It appears to be a mechanical issue," said Purcell. "They said they had a mechanical issue with their SUV."
