Dump truck fire on James River Bridge shut down lanes Thursday morning

All lanes of travel are open after a vehicle fire on the James River Bridge shut down traffic Thursday morning.

The vehicle fire took place around 8 a.m. in a southbound lane, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. All lanes were closed for about an hour, with northbound lanes opening around 9 a.m. Southbound lanes opened around 9:30 a.m., according to posts on X.

The vehicle involved was a dump truck, Newport News Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Haraburda said.

“The dump truck driver did a great job of controlling the vehicle and not having more catastrophic results,” Haraburda said. No one was injured in the fire and crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly and clear the scene, he added.
