All the Times Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Stood Up for Herself on Twitter
When ELLE.com sat down with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shortly after she won her congressional primary, she was clear about one thing: She will not be bullied. At the time, conservative TV host John Cardillo was trying to question her Bronx credentials, and the now congresswoman-elect was quick to respond:
Hey John,
1. I didn’t go to Brown or the Ivy League. I went to BU. Try Google.
2. It is nice. Growing up, it was a good town for working people. My mom scrubbed toilets so I could live here & I grew up seeing how the zip code one is born in determines much of their opportunity.- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) July 1, 2018
"I grew up being bullied," she explained. "I also grew up as a brown girl in a non-brown environment. So I’m used to people trying to define me for me. And I’m over it."
Since then, Ocasio-Cortez has only grown more brazen on Twitter, confronting those who come for her and her community, whether it's over the clothes she wears or how honest she is about her finances. Below, some of her most delicious comebacks.
The time she stood up for New York's 14th congressional district.
Ah yes, God forbid a diverse, working-class district (that more accurately represents modern America) actually have equal say in our democracy as your weird uncle with questionable racial beliefs who shares fake conspiracy memes on Facebook. https://t.co/1W6aUzDX7l

The time she called out Republicans for always searching for her slip-ups.
Maybe instead of Republicans drooling over every minute of footage of me in slow-mo, waiting to chop up word slips that I correct in real-tomd, they actually step up enough to make the argument they want to make:
that they don’t believe people deserve a right to healthcare. https://t.co/fMOijEa7tF- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 19, 2018
The time she pointed out the blatant misogyny of a now-viral tweet criticizing her clothing.
Oh, does @eScarry think he can delete his misogyny without an apology?
I don’t think so. You’re a journalist - readers should know your bias. pic.twitter.com/2KJuiPsUR2- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 16, 2018
The time she refused to let someone doubt her experience as a young woman of color in Washington D.C.
- Dem Spouse + Member luncheon were at the same time today. I was sent to spouse event.
- Last night I was stopped bc it was assumed I was an intern/staffer
- Next time try believing women + people of color when they talk about their experiences being a woman or person of color https://t.co/xXwAUegQNI- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 15, 2018
At dinner with a congressman. He said there were no intern events today that he knows of. His staff said same. #liar https://t.co/1McNy3LNzH

The time she stood up for her platform.
Oh no! They discovered our vast conspiracy to take care of children and save the planet 😂 pic.twitter.com/XYWXmi3Xyk

The time she called out hypocrisy.
So your treasured late-stage capitalist leaders... live in public housing? https://t.co/IR1ddl4CfG

And the time she told off Fox News for questioning her finances and mispronouncing her name.
1. @FoxNews, why can’t any of your anchors say my name correctly? It’s been 5 months.
2. It is bizarre to see 1%-salaried anchors laugh at the US housing crisis.
3. Never purchased pricey clothes + always told my story. But repeating lies until they are believed is your thing. https://t.co/Py5aXFi3Z4- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 9, 2018
