Semi-truck catches fire in Summit County, expect US-40 delays

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A semi-truck caught fire in Summit County early Thursday morning, March 28, causing lane closures and delays along a Utah highway.

Utah Highway Patrol said the incident happened along US-40 between mile markers four and five near Park City. The fire briefly closed the highway in both directions, causing delays.

Photos from the scene show a tanker with a scorched hole burned into the side. Tires near the burn mark appeared melted on the asphalt.

Around 8:30 a.m., UHP said the eastbound lanes had fully reopened while only one westbound lane reopened for traffic. Authorities warned commuters there may still be traffic delays in the area as crews work to clear the scene.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, westbound traffic in the area has slowed considerably. UDOT’s alert map shows a long line of nearly stopped traffic extending from the incident to Deer Hollow Road, nearly four miles away.

Utah Highway Patrol did not disclose what caused the semi-truck to catch fire.
