Retaliation 'premature' for Iraq attack -State Dept

When pressed on possible retaliation against the perpetrators of Monday's rocket attack, Price said he did not want to get ahead of an investigation into who was responsible, but that the United States reserved the right to respond "at a time and place of our choosing."

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on Tuesday, and said the United States was "outraged" by the attack.

The rockets landed in and around a military air base operated by the coalition at Erbil International Airport.

The attack, claimed by a little-known group that some Iraqi officials say has links with Iran, raises tensions as Washington explores some degree of detente with Tehran.

The attack comes just three weeks before a March 5-8 visit to Iraq by Pope Francis, which is due to include Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdish autonomous region.
