WASHINGTON — President Trump suggested the dangerous packages sent to prominent Democrats and critics of his administration were hurting Republicans, in a tweet sent on Friday morning.

“Republicans are doing so well in early voting, and at the polls, and now this ‘Bomb’ stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows – news not talking politics. Very unfortunate, what is going on. Republicans, go out and vote!” Trump said.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Yahoo News about whether there is any evidence the mailings were an effort to hurt Republicans in next month’s midterm elections.

Since Wednesday, a total of 12 packages containing explosive devices have been intercepted. They were addressed to leading Democrats, media organizations and prominent critics of the president. The FBI, which is leading the investigation into the packages, has only confirmed the existence of 11 packages and has not released any information about suspects or any potential motivation for the mailings.

According to the FBI, the 11 packages all have a similar appearance and contained “potentially destructive devices.” The intended recipients for the packages included former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, California Rep. Maxine Waters, contributors to MSNBC and CNN, the liberal donor George Soros and actor Robert De Niro.

None of the devices inside the packages have detonated, and thus far no one has been injured by the mailings. The news about the latest packages broke on Friday morning, shortly before the president’s tweet.
