La Palma Volcano Spews Lava as Cone Partially Collapses
The flow of lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma intensified on October 3, while the cone of the volcano partially collapsed.
“A clear increase [in] the effusive activity has been observed in the last minutes,” Involcan said that evening.
Some scientists and emergency personnel working near the lava flows were ordered to evacuate due to poor air quality.
The president of the Canary Islands ruled out more evacuations for the time being.
Two earthquakes were reported on La Palma in the early hours of October 4. In Fuencaliente, a municipality in the southern part of the island, a magnitude-3.7 earthquake was reported, while a 3.4-magnitude quake was detected in the town of Mazo.
