This year marks 200 years since the birth of abolitionist and political activist Harriet Tubman. As America prepares for the bicentennial, the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center and the City of Auburn plan to celebrate the American icon for seven months.

Tubman died March 10, 1913, in Auburn, New York.

"Auburn has had a remarkable role in American history," Auburn Mayor Michael D. Quill said. "We are excited to invite everyone here to learn more about the life of Harriet Tubman, why she settled here, and the 50 years she lived here. The City of Auburn is proud to support the Tubman Bicentennial and encourage all to make plans to visit us in 2022 as we celebrate and share her story."

The seven-month celebration begins on the day Tubman died. It continues throughout Sept. 2022, with events in Cayuga County and beyond focused on revealing Tubman's life and legacy.

Events include:

Harriet Tubman Day Memorial Service

The Howland Daguerreotypes

In 2017, historians were startled by discovering a photograph of a young, stylishly dressed, Harriet Tubman. That photo was included in a one-of-a-kind album owned by reformer and Sherwood resident Emily Howland. The album is now on display at the African American Museum in Washington, D.C.

On March 20, historian Larry Bell will unveil 11 amazing daguerreotypes from a collection that preceded the Howland photo album. This presentation will preview an upcoming exhibit this spring.
