JCPD: Missing man Mark ‘Shoestring’ Nichols found dead in Boone Lake

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has confirmed missing Johnson City man and popular YouTube creator Mark “Shoestring” Nichols was found dead.

According to the TBI, Nichols was found dead in Johnson City on Friday.

A Silver Alert for Nichols was issued on Sunday, March 31. Nichols had last been seen on March 27, the TBI reported.

The Johnson City Police Department told News Channel 11 that fishermen had discovered an adult male’s body in Boone Lake Friday.

The JCPD later confirmed Nichols was the person found in the lake. Crews had already been searching the lake for Nichols’ body when the fisherman found him in the area of Knob Creek Dock Road, a JCPD spokesperson told News Channel 11.

Missing Johnson City man’s family following up on leads, tips

Captain Mike Adams of the JCPD said prior to the body’s identification that if it was Nichols, the investigation would not be over until police knew what led to his death.

“If this is Mr. Nichols, the investigation is not over,” said Captain Mike Adams of the JCPD. “We’re going to investigate it fully until we’re confident on what happened with Mr. Nichols.”

Other agencies, including the JCPD, were called to the scene. The Washington County Dive Rescue and Recovery Team was also at the scene, News Channel 11 crews observed.

Nichols had over 100,000 subscribers on YouTube, where he would share his cross-country travels on trains.
