A 60-year-old man who died in an East Akron residential fire Friday morning has been identified.

Michael Elkins died in the fire at a single-story home on Huber Street just after 3 a.m., the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed.

Upon arrival, responders were greeted by heavy smoke and flames that consumed the entirety of the structure.

One occupant escaped the burning building before firefighters arrived and was treated and transported to a local hospital by paramedics, according to the press release. The occupant alerted firefighters that there was still another person inside. The burning building became fully engulfed, which eventually led to the roof's collapse.

"Despite the best efforts of the fire department, the person remaining in the house was unable to be saved," the department said in the release prior to the medical examiner's office releasing Elkins' name.
