Will Deadpool Join the X-Men? Ryan Reynolds Weighs In

Marvel’s foul-mouthed mutant Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) was created in the same evil lab as Wolverine, and even fought Hugh Jackman’s character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now that he has his own movie, Deadpool has been promoted from villain to anti-hero — so is there any chance he’ll team up with the X-Men? Reynolds has his doubts. During a conversation at Comic-Con, the Deadpool actor said a crossover is possible, but he’s just not sure what will happen if those universes collide. Watch the video, above.

“I feel so bad for them if we did that!” Reynolds says of a potential Deadpool/X-Men team-up, though he adds that such a project may already be in the works. (“I know there’s a plan,” he tells Yahoo Movies.)

So why the bad feelings? The actor just isn’t sure how Deadpool’s wiseass meta-commentary would fit into the more conventional superhero sensibility of the X-Men films. “He’s aware that he’s in a comic book, he’s aware that he’s played by another person,” Reynolds says of his masked character. “So you just have to be kind of careful how you do it.”

He does have one idea, though: A film adaptation of the comic X-Force, an X-Men spin-off featuring its own team of mutants (including Deadpool). I think that’s a great way to expand the Deadpool universe a little bit, but also introduce Cable and all these other great characters that come along with that,” says Reynolds.

Deadpool opens in theaters on February 12.
