Crews recover teen’s body from Lake Wylie after he jumped from bridge, never resurfaced

Crews recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy Friday night after he jumped from a catwalk under a bridge into Lake Wylie and never resurfaced, officials said.

The boy has been identified as Yanni Harvell of Clover, according to the York County Coroner’s office.

First responders were called to the bridge on Concord Road in York County at about 4 p.m. after getting a 911 call that someone had jumped into the lake and didn’t come back up.

“A 16-year-old male jumped from the bridge into Lake Wylie and two other people with him said they did not see him resurface,” said Trent Farris, public information officer with the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Channel 9 Skyzoom flew to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. where multiple agencies could be seen searching the water at the Concord Road Bridge, which is south of the Catawba Nuclear Plant.

There are several no-trespassing signs near the bridge and warning signs on the catwalk.

The catwalk and path up to it have been closed for years, Faris said.

“There are a lot of warnings not to go out here,” Faris said. “I’m sure at one time, this was a popular place because there is a catwalk under the bridge for walking, recreation but it has been closed.”

Last week, about 15 to 20 people ignored the warning signs at the bridge. Deputies were called to the bridge then, too.
