Simi Valley woman drowns in ocean near Ventura's Pierpoint area

A Simi Valley woman drowned Sunday afternoon in the ocean waters off the beach in the Pierpont area of Ventura, officials said.

She was identified as 31-year-old Devyn Chesser.

The drowning was accidental, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Capt. Greg Gibson said Chesser was out swimming with a group of people but he did not know how she got into trouble.

The sheriff’s office was notified at mid-afternoon and sent out a helicopter and a diver to rescue her, but she drowned before rescuers could save her, he said.

Chesser was transferred to a boat owned by the state Parks Department and taken to shore, where an ambulance transported her to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, he said.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital, he said.
