Would you dress according to your zodiac sign?

According to astrology, there’s a lot we can learn about ourselves from our birth sign — from who we’re most compatible with to when to ask for a promotion or take a vacation, and even how we should feel. But one YouTuber consulted astrology sites to determine what she should wear for a week.

In a viral video titled, “I Dressed According To My Zodiac Sign For A Week,” Safiya Nygaard summarized the results. After coming across a number of Instagram platforms where clothing items were categorized by different astrological signs, Nygaard decided to give some of the looks a go by dressing according to the suggestions for Cancer.

Through researching Cancer’s traits, as well as considering her own interpretation of the star sign, Nygaard formed an impression of what a Cancer’s closet would look like. And if it had any similarity to her own, it would be pretty comfort-oriented.

“I’m curious to see if they’re accurate at describing my current style sense,” she explained in the video. “And if they aren’t, see if they uncover an underlying style desire that I have not yet explored.”

The experiment ultimately took off, with Nygaard questioning whether fashion horoscopes are at all accurate, which motivated her to consult a number of sources to find out. While much of her outfit inspiration came from zodiac Instagram accounts, she admitted that she wasn’t sure how the looks were put together by the people behind them.

“There isn’t a ton of visibility into the decision making behind these posts, but I did message a bunch of these accounts,” Nygaard said. “One of them did get back to me, @onelastbreakfree, and they said that they mostly try and match the items to the personality of the zodiac sign.”

After scanning outfits recommended by sources such as Stitch Fix, PopSugar, and the LaLa, Nygaard looked at what she currently owned and determined what she had to buy to complete each look. On average, she had about 40 percent of the clothing items for each look already in her closet.

In a consultation with astrologist and psychic Miss Mermaid, this 40 percent seemed to accurately represent the part of Nygaard’s personality that corresponds to her Cancer traits. But since a single zodiac sign doesn’t illustrate a person’s entire personality, Miss Mermaid clarified that Nygaard also identifies with an Aquarius, according to the first house on her birth chart.

“Once in a while you want to do something experimental,” Miss Mermaid said of an Aquarius, which helped Nygaard understand the multifaceted aspects of zodiac signs.

All in all, Nygaard said that the best recommendations for her personal style came from Miss Mermaid, whom she consulted with in person, rather than the sources she found online. Like most things, you have to take your zodiac recommendations with a grain of salt and do what feels right to you.
