A New Canon Star Wars Story Hints At When the Next Film Series Could Take Place

From Esquire

Now that the Skywalker saga has come to an end, the future of Star Wars is a mystery. Will Disney focus solely on animated series for a while? Could Rian Johnson be taking the helm with a new trilogy of his own? Or is it all about Disney Plus now?

As always, fans over on the Star Wars Leaks Subreddit have some (alleged) scoops to share. And according to them, Disney is banking big on something called "Project Luminous." If you want to believe the leakers, Luminous is a forthcoming multimedia event that takes place a few centuries before The Phantom Menace during something called the "High Republic." It would span films, video games, books–the whole nine.

Until recently, the whole "High Republic" thing has been nothing more than a series of Reddit posts and podcast recordings from excited fans who claim to have insider knowledge about the next step for Star Wars. But this week, there were actual references to this mysterious new (old) time period in real, legitimate canon Star Wars stories.

The Marvel comic series, Star Wars–which takes place shortly after Empire Strikes Back–made mention of the era. A Rebel commander named Grek says in the second issue of the recently relaunched series:

"In the days of the High Republic, the galaxy was not as settled as it is now. Areas like the Outer Rim were dangerous, hard to navigate. So the people of that time built a huge space station at great effort and expense and placed it in the center of the dark zones. It sent out a signal that acted as a sort of beacon, helping travelers find their way."

To make things more interesting, an ABC reporter recently tweeted that there will be a big Project Luminous event on February 24 that will inevitably spill the beans about the big now initiative.

While we have no way of knowing if any of the leaks are legit, the High Republic is seeming more likely than ever. Hopefully, whatever it is, Disney doesn't botch it like they did with the end of the Skywalker saga.
