Buffoon' or 'best president'? Top comments on Trump

President Trump’s approval ratings across eight major polls just dropped to their lowest point in six months, rocked by the fraught legal cases of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and Trump attorney Michael Cohen, an anonymous New York Times op-ed by a senior White House staffer and a new book by Watergate reporter Bob Woodward, and the president’s own remarks about Puerto Rico. The polls — from ABC News/Washington Post, CNN, Gallup, and several other outlets — all have his approval rating below 40 percent. Not many people outside of his base agree with Twitter user America First that “President Donald Trump is rock solid to win the 2020 election.” Yahoo commenters seem similarly split on the unconventional president, whose lawsuits, controversial policy decisions, and Twitter wars have some readers boiling. “He should have done some homework on how to act presidential before running for president,” wrote one reader on an original Yahoo Lifestyle article about the president’s trip to an elementary school. “It must be nice living in a universe where you get to make up your own facts,” another commenter said of Trump’s Puerto Rico comments. “I mistakenly voted for this guy,” one former supporter said on the same article. “Never again. Congress won’t provide checks and balances, so I’ll vote Democratic from now on.” Several readers shared this sentiment: “This current unregistered conservative would cheer his resignation,” one commenter said on a page about the president’s latest fake-news claims. “He’s an obnoxious, egotistical buffoon.” Another reader said he “missed the days when the president wasn’t a national embarrassment.” But many commenters stepped in to defend the president, recalling why they’d voted for him in the first place: “We don’t want an elite ruling class here,” one reader said on a blog about Trump’s continued attacks on former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. “We want term limits and politicians who can tell the occasional truth.” Others lauded the president’s achievements thus far: “The economy is very strong and he has accomplished more than Obama did in eight years,” one reader said. “Trump has flaws, but he is still the best president of my lifetime,” another wrote. “He fights for regular working class people.” Plenty of commenters claimed that mainstream media weren't giving the president a fair shot: “I’ve never seen people reach harder to make a president look bad,” one commenter said. “For heaven’s sake,” another wrote, “why don’t you people just give him a break.” But more frequently, comments across Yahoo Lifestyle sounded more like this: “Vote like our country depends on it come November, because it does.” What do you think?
