Democrats fear political risks of Obama's Invesco speech

DENVER - Senior Democratic officials are expressing serious concerns about the political risks posed by Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium Thursday evening.

Should Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain win, he would be 72 when he takes the oath of office, the oldest first-term president in U.S. history. He has survived three bouts of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, and acknowledges his choice of a vice presidential running mate will be of 'enhanced importance.' DENVER - Looking toward his turn in the spotlight, Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain sought to siphon attention from Democrat Barack Obama's show in Denver by playing coy about his pick for vice president.

Tourists flee as Gustav churns toward Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Tourists and oil workers fled Thursday as Gustav churned toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands with winds near hurricane force. Louisiana called a state of emergency and put the National Guard on standby, hoping to avoid the chaos of Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
