Two ties make for an unusual night at the Critics' Choice Awards

Sometimes picking just one winner can be hard. No entity knows that better than the Critics' Choice Awards. Ever since the very first Critics' Choice Awards ceremony in 1996, in which Ed Harris and Kevin Spacey tied for Best Actor, the CCA's have had trouble handing out only one award per category. This year Amy Adams (Sharp Objects) and Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora) tied for Best Actress in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series. And while traditionally each winner receives their awards separately, Adams insisted that they accept at the same time. This led to a funny moments when Adams thanked HBO and was immediately followed by Arquette thanking the network's rival Showtime. For Adams, CCA ties are nothing new. In 2006 Adams (Junebug) tied Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) for the Best Supporting Actress award. Adams and Arquette weren't the only actresses sharing honors in 2019. Glenn Close and Lady Gaga also tied for the Best Actress award. Close was happy to share the award, saying "I am so thrilled it's a tie, I can't tell you! I was thinking that, you know, the world kind of pits us against each other in this profession. And I know from all the women in this category, and I think I can speak for all the women in this room, we celebrate each other." Gaga was also happy to share the award, saying, "My mother and Glenn are good friends. So I'm so happy that you won this this evening." While it is not uncommon for the there to be a tie, it has now happened at least a dozen times. But this is only the second time that there have been two ties in a single night. In 1996 A Bug's Life and Prince of Egypt tied for Best Animated Feature, and Joan Allen (Pleasantville) tied Kathy Bates (Primary Colors) for Best Supporting Actress. The Critics' Choice Awards aired Sunday night at 7 p.m. on CW.
