Taylor Swift confirms she'll begin rerecording her first five albums in 2020 amid feud with former label

Taylor Swift has confirmed that she’ll be remaking her first five albums amid a feud with her former label.

The “Lover” songstress dropped the news Thursday during her Good Morning America appearance. She said she’ll begin the process in late 2020 — when she’s contractually allowed to.

During an interview with Robin Roberts, Swift said the reason that Lover, which comes out Friday, is so special to her is because “it’s the first one that I will own,” Her fans reacted by cheering wildly, so she added, “Which is a concept they are very supportive of.”

That opened the door for Roberts to ask Swift about rerecording the first five albums that she made early in her career while signed to Big Machine Label Group, which was acquired in July by Swift’s apparent nemesis Scooter Braun.

“Yeah, it’s true,” Swift said, “and it’s something I’m really excited about doing it because my contract says that starting November 2020, so next year, I can record albums one through five all over again. I’m really excited about it.”

She added, “It’s right around the corner. I’m going to be busy.”

As for why it’s so important, Swift said, “I think that artists deserve to own their work. I’m very passionate about that.”

Swift also announced that she will be opening the MTV VMAs on Monday.

The concert — in NYC’s Central Park — was extremely well-attended. Swift’s father passed out pizza overnight to her fans who had camped out ahead of the show.

“As a family, it blows our mind that people would want to do that,” she said of her fans. “My parents, they’re like — that’s my kid. People are waiting on the sidewalk to see her sing. It’s really astonishing to us.”

Swift’s feud with her former label has been making headlines all summer. Big Machine Label Group founder Scott Borchetta announced the sale of the label — including the masters to all her songs prior to her new album Lover — to Braun for $300 million. (Swift left Big Machine in November, signing a new deal with Universal Music Group.)

Swift spoke out about the sale, claiming she wasn’t offered a chance to buy her own music. Borchetta spoke out to dispute that. But she also said that it was especially stinging Braun had been a “bully” to her for years, stemming from drama with Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian. Braun denied it and has been defended by several of his celebrity clients, including Bieber and Demi Lovato.

Kelly Clarkson suggested pretty early on that Swift rerecord her music — and that’s exactly what she’ll be doing.

Swift will speak out more about rerecording her music in an interview on this week’s CBS Sunday Morning, which broke the news.
