Stephen Colbert gives presidential hopeful Kirsten Gillibrand a ticket to Michigan

On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) announced that she’s making a run for the presidency in 2020. To help her out on the campaign trail, Colbert had a few gifts for her, one of them being very important. Besides giving corn on the cob for when she’s in Iowa, granite for when she’s in New Hampshire, and mustard-based barbecue sauce for when she’s in South Carolina, Colbert gave Gillibrand a plane ticket to Michigan in hopes she doesn’t make the same mistake Hillary Clinton made in the 2016 presidential election. Michigan was one of the states in which Clinton famously barely bothered to campaign that could have swayed the election in her favor. Though Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro had previously announced their intentions to run in 2020, Gillibrand has already set herself apart. Warren announced her candidacy in an Instagram video, while Castro made the announcement in a speech in his hometown of San Antonio, but Gillibrand is the first (so far) to announce hers on The Late Show, and Colbert had a one-of-a-kind gift.

“We got you this coveted pin,” Colbert said handing her the pin. “It’s a one-of-a-kind so far, and it’s ‘I announced on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.’ It’s a collectors item.Colbert also talked to Gillibrand about her use of colorful language. In 2017, Gillibrand made headlines for dropping multiple f-bombs at the Personal Democracy Forum, and in a 2018 Late Show appearance, she told Colbert that she gave up swearing for lent. On Tuesday night, she said she was going to “definitely try” not to swear while campaigning. When asked what word she’ll miss the most, she said it, “rhymes with duck.”
