'Star Wars Resistance': Disney releases first trailer, plot details for animated series

Who could turn down a spy mission from Poe Dameron? Definitely not Kazuda Xiono, the protagonist of Disney’s new animated series Star Wars Resistance.

In the first trailer for the show (watch above), which takes place shortly before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, young Resistance pilot Kaz receives an unusual assignment from ace pilot Dameron (voiced in a cameo by Oscar Isaac). “Blend in, find out who’s loyal to the good guys and who isn’t,” Dameron instructs, dropping Kaz off on an outer-rim water planet full of strange new aliens and droids. Luckily, Kaz is not alone in his mission: Poe has dispatched his favorite astromech, BB-8, to lend a hand (or pop-out arm, as the case may be). As the Resistance spy finds work at a spaceship repair shop and practices his pilot skills in risky sky races, he struggles to keep his identity from his new friends and to gather Poe’s intel — all while evading the powerful First Order.

“That was so fun,” Isaac remarked to Yahoo Entertainment about his Resistance voiceover gig when we caught up with him to discuss the upcoming film, Operation: Finale. “It’s the first time that I’ve had a character that lives outside of one movie, so that was pretty special, because I get to learn about the character through all these different mediums that have Poe in them.”

With an anime-inspired style conceived by Avatar: The Last Airbender artist and Lucasfilm animation veteran Dave Filoni, the aviation adventure series features the voice talents of Hawaii Five-0’s Paul Narita, Scrubs’s Donald Faison (whose character is awesomely named Hype Fazon), and SNL’s Bobby Moynihan, as well as appearances from Isaac and Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma). Voice impressionist and former America’s Got Talent contestant Rachel Butera will play the late Carrie Fisher’s role of Gen. Leia Organa.

Star Wars Resistance will premiere on Oct. 7 on the Disney Channel and DisneyNOW, followed by airings on Disney XD.
