Jason Mitchell wishes he didn't turn down lead role in 'Get Out'
Jason Mitchell‘s stellar 2017 could have even been better.
The Straight Outta Compton alum is currently generating awards buzz for the historical epic Mudbound, and he also appeared in Warner Bros.’s monster reboot Kong: Skull Island as well as in Kathryn Bigelow’s searing police-brutality drama Detroit.
And, according to what Mitchell told Yahoo Entertainment on the red carpet of Saturday’s Governors Awards, he could have had a shot at the lead role in the year’s biggest sleeper, Get Out, the surprise Oscar contender and racial horror satire written and directed by Jordan Peele.
“I was doing Keanu with him while he was still writing the film, and he was like, ‘I don’t know if you’d like to do this, your guy Caleb Landry Jones is going to be in this, and I think it’ll be a dope movie. But it’s kind of like a horror film, I can’t really tell you what I’m doing. But it’s kind of like a horror film but not,'” Mitchell recounted. “And I was like, ‘I think I’m going to go do King Kong.”
Mitchell confirmed Peele was pitching the role of Chris Washington, the protagonist (“the black guy,” Mitchell laughed) that ultimately went to Daniel Kaluuya.
“Jordan, I’m so sorry,” Mitchell confessed. “Next thing, call me up. I’m there. I got you.”
