Instead of getting down on one knee, paralyzed man stands up to propose to girlfriend

Action News Jax in Jacksonville, Fla., reported on a local man named Jacob Newton who wanted to propose to the mother of his three children in his own inspiring way, after recently becoming paralyzed.

Newton was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare disorder that quickly attacks the nervous system, after he woke up feeling numbness and muscle spasms below his waist.

“Whenever I first woke up, I was in instant shock. I was scared to death,” Newton told Action News Jax.

It has been just under a month since Newton’s diagnosis, and after going through intense rehab, he decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Mary Batar, by doing something she hasn’t seen him do in a while: stand up.

When Batar came for a visit, there were rose petals, a red carpet and candles laid out. And sure enough he stood up, pulled out a ring and popped the question.

And she said yes!

According to Action News Jax, Newton wanted to share his story to spread awareness and help others catch the early symptoms of GBS.
